Diagonal-cut slab of wood with a burl inset, collected in Yukon

Carved from a diagonal slice of aspen burl, this elongated tray reveals the quiet pulse of the tree it came from. At one end, the swirling grain of the burl draws the eye in like a weather system, while the rest of the surface traces outward in soft, expanding rings. These natural lines — the tree’s own calendar — are frozen mid-motion, like ripples held still.

The heartwood is visible, slightly offset, its tone deepening gently toward the center. Smooth to the touch but marked with subtle textures, the tray invites the hand as much as the eye.

The edges are organic, unforced, following the original shape of the slab rather than correcting it.
