Old burl found in the forest near Haines Junction
This bowl was carved from a black spruce burl found deep in the forest near Haines Junction.. Fallen trees rest half-buried in the soil, softened by years of weather and time. It’s the kind of place where silence settles easily, broken only by the wind moving through the trees.
The burl had already begun to give way—its outer layers softened, crumbling under pressure. Half of it was lost. What remained was dense, weathered, and holding onto its original shape, just enough to work with.
Sanding took time. The softened wood had to be removed carefully, layer by layer, until something solid reappeared. The result is a piece that still holds the memory of its original form—altered by decay, but not erased.
This bowl is what was left behind. A remnant of something long exposed, shaped by years of weather, and returned to use.
